I received an exciting e-mail from Rusty Kennedy, the AMA's
coordinator of the Leader Member program:
"AMA Clubs Encouraged to Participate in First Annual
National Model Aviation Day, August 17, 2013.
To celebrate the
storied history of model aviation, AMA chartered clubs are
encouraged to take part in the first annual National Model
Aviation Day on August 17, 2013. Clubs across the country
are invited to host an event of their choice to celebrate
the day. Clubs are encouraged to reach out and make this a
community event. National Model Aviation Day will be a great
opportunity to introduce model aviation to your friends and
families. And, for this inaugural year, we’re asking that
clubs who host an event do so in support of the Wounded
Warrior Project.
Wounded Warrior’s
mission is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid
for the needs of injured members of the US Military and to
provide programs and services to help support our country’s
injured heroes. Hosting an event on National Model Aviation
Day is a win/win for AMA clubs, its members, and all of
those courageous service men and women who have given so
much to protect the freedoms we all enjoy.
Please stay tuned
as details will soon be released on the AMA website, in
Model Aviation magazine, and in future issues of AMA Today.

I'd like to encourage all of the club in
Nebraska and Iowa to participate. If you don't have an
event planned yet for Saturday, August 17th, then you have
plenty of time to organize something. If already have
something planned for that Saturday, why not put out the
donation bucket and collect some cash to donate to the
Wounded Warrior Project?
This is a good opportunity to not only
raise money for a worthy cause, but you can invite the
public and your local media out to your event to help raise
awareness about model aviation and all of the good works
that the AMA clubs support throughout the country.
Please feel free to contact me if you'd
like some help putting an event together. It can be as big
or small as you'd like to make it. I'm hoping to make it
around to several area clubs near the Ashland/Gretna
metroplex and encourage you all to add National Model
Aviation Day event planning to your club agendas!
