Carbon Rod Indoor Plane Info

This is my plane "Keith"
      I have now built a plane like this and it has been tremendously successful.  Here is a link to a short video of it:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJlxV0TlGrU

One of Lantsov's airplanes

       Lantsov uses 1mm and .6mm carbon rod but doesn't know where you can find the 3 micron lavsan mylar.

I believe that converts to .040 and .024 carbon rod.  These are rounded off figures.

       I would like to build an airplane like this, as well as some other indoor flyers.  If you have any info especially on lighter, stronger covering, email me and I will add it to this page.  E-Mail Keith

Conversion Factors

       In order to find the thickness of the mylar that Lantsov used you sometimes need to convert microns to mils, since many Mylar suppliers show their material in English or inches.

       Did I mention that I don't speak metric.  I hate metric.  All it ever does is wastes your time converting it to English.  Ah! Now I feel better.  So here's the conversion:

 Mylar - 3 microns = 1.18 mils

       3 microns = 0.000118" or 1.18 thousands or 1.18 mils or not rounded off it's 0.118110236 mils

Carbon Fiber Rods - 1mm = .040"

                                      .6mm = .024'

       Lantsov uses 1-mm and 0.6 mm carbon fiber rod the above figures are rounded off.

Finding Mylar that is strong like Ripstop Polyester but lighter weight.

      I have been searching for several years for a covering material like Ripstop but I have been unable to find anything lighter that didn't shrink out of shape and was strong enough to stand the daily wear & tear.

I think this may be the place in Russia that Lavsan comes from?:

      I publish Metro Area R/C Flying to make a central web site for all the area R/C clubs, not to replace individual club sites, but to tie all of them together and promote growth and interaction between clubs. The most important service of the web site is to post the Metro Area Schedule. The schedule lists all the events for all the clubs in one location so that R/C flyers can see what events are available in the area and plan ahead. I believe it will also help the area clubs to work out their schedules so that a club event, will not conflict, with another club's event. The next most important service is to provide a Page that has maps to all the events, meetings, dinners and parties. Right after that comes the Newsletter Page which lists club newsletters. Reading other club newsletters lets members see what others are offering in the area that they are interested in and promotes interaction between clubs.  This is your web site, if you would like to show-off your newest plane, or share an experience, you can E-Mail pictures and articles to me at: MetroRCFlying@Gmail.com  There’s an Email Link on every page.
